Method

How is overtime pay calculated?

The calculation has four steps. Overtime pay is not taxed as a separate payment; it is added to that month's salary.

  1. Hourly wage

Monthly gross pay is divided by 225: gross ÷ 225

  2. Premium hourly rate

    × 1.5 for overtime, × 1.25 for extra hours

  3. Gross overtime pay

The premium hourly rate is multiplied by the hours worked.

  4. Net overtime pay

What remains after SGK, unemployment insurance, income tax and stamp tax.

Worked example

For an employee earning TRY 50,000.00 gross who works 10 hours of overtime in January:

Hourly wage50,000 ÷ 225
TRY 222.22
Overtime hourly rate× 1.5
TRY 333.33
Gross overtime pay× 10 hours
TRY 3,333.33
Employee SGK + unemployment insurance
− TRY 500.00
Income tax + stamp tax
− TRY 450.30
Net overtime pay
TRY 2,383.03

Good to Know

What is overtime?

Work exceeding 45 hours a week is called overtime (fazla çalışma in the Labour Law). For each overtime hour, the employee is paid the normal hourly wage plus 50% on top of the monthly salary.

What are extra hours?

If your contract sets weekly working time below 45 hours (for example 40 hours), the hours you work above that and up to 45 hours count as extra hours (fazla sürelerle çalışma). They are paid at the normal hourly wage plus 25%; anything above 45 hours is still overtime at a 50% premium.

Why 225 hours?

45 hours a week spread over six working days is 7.5 hours a day. Payroll treats a month as 30 days, so monthly working time is 7.5 × 30 = 225 hours. For contracts below 45 hours it decreases proportionally; at 40 hours a week, 200 hours a month is used.

Is consent required for overtime?

Yes. Overtime requires the employee's written consent, which is renewed at the start of each year. An employee who has not consented cannot be made to work overtime and can withdraw consent with 30 days' notice.

The 270-hour annual limit

Overtime and extra hours together cannot exceed 270 hours a year. If your timesheets are approaching this limit, plan ahead with your HR team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about overtime pay

How is the overtime hourly rate calculated in 2026?

Divide your monthly gross pay by 225 to get your hourly wage, then multiply it by 1.5. For example, with a gross salary of TRY 50,000.00 the hourly wage is TRY 222.22 and one hour of overtime pays TRY 333.33.

How much is one hour of overtime on the minimum wage?

With a 2026 gross minimum wage of TRY 33,030.00, the hourly wage is TRY 146.80 and one overtime hour pays TRY 220.20 gross. The net amount is lower after deductions.

What is the maximum overtime per year?

Under the Turkish Labour Law, total overtime cannot exceed 270 hours a year. The limit applies to overtime and extra hours combined.

Which deductions apply to overtime pay?

Overtime pay is added to the same month's payroll as your salary. The employee SGK share (14%), unemployment insurance (1%), income tax (at that month's bracket) and stamp tax (0.759%) are deducted from the gross amount.

Why do I get less net overtime pay towards the end of the year for the same hours?

Income tax is calculated on the cumulative tax base built up during the year. Once your base moves into a higher bracket, more tax is withheld from the same gross overtime pay and the net amount falls.

Can I take time off instead of overtime pay?

Yes. If you wish, you can take 1 hour 30 minutes of time off for each hour of overtime and 1 hour 15 minutes for each extra hour. The time off is given within six months without any deduction from your pay. Your employer cannot make you take time off instead of pay.

Does working on national and public holidays count as overtime?

Work on national and public holidays is treated separately from overtime; an additional day's wage is paid for each day worked. This tool only calculates overtime and extra hours.

Who cannot work overtime?

Employees under 18, pregnant employees, employees who have recently given birth or are breastfeeding, part-time employees, employees in jobs limited to 7.5 hours a day or less for health reasons and employees who document that their health does not allow it cannot work overtime, even with consent. Overtime cannot be assigned for night work either.
